Bridging the gap between conventional and holistic medicine
Pharmphood TM is exploring the potential of the scientific hypothesis 'The regulation of the partial pressure of oxygen by the serotonergic nervous system in hypoxia' and its extension, the SIA (serotonin-immune-adrenergic) system which was published in the journal Medical Hypotheses in March 2013. Further information is available on Pharmphood Wordpress blog. The hypothesis is a unique scientific work which supports a holistic approach in medicine and diet and lifestyle changes in infection and chronic disease. It describes the complicated and fragile regulation of homeostasis and the need to combine pharmaceuticals with diet, exercise, dental hygiene, stress management and other complementary healthcare services. It also requires the participation of doctors and nurses due to the complexity of the central nervous/endocrine/vascular system and the immune system. Pharmphood TM(pharm-pH-oxygen-diet) is a registered trademark aimed at bringing the cross scientific area together. The PPTM logo can be used to unite healthcare professionals with an understanding of the SIA system and provide safety and security for patients as they proceed with diet and lifestyle changes in combination with conventional therapy.
History
With the advent of vaccines, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals we put too much faith in our limited scientific knowledge and failed to understand the significance of the role of diet and lifestyle in disease. However, in the majority of cases we were able to survive multiple infections/toxins in a lifetime which enabled us to plan, work and enjoy our lives to the full until hit by chronic disease, cancer or dementia. This has caused the medical profession to become increasingly specialized and reinforced the idea that treatment consists only of pills and clinical treatment. Alternative/integrated medicine/special diets emerged to 'bridge the gap' as patients became frustrated at the lack of progress and recognition of a plethora of symptomatology but without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms underlying the pathology.
Moving forward with the SIA system
Once the SIA system is understood, it can be used to:
. educate patients about the diet and lifestyle changes needed to complement their conventional treatment plan
. identify those products and services that can be used during infection/stress/chronic disease to reduce the metabolic/antigen load and aid recovery
. create new products, particularly in the area of food and drink
. change the narrative to one where patients can understand the reason for specific diet and lifestyle changes and work together with healthcare professionals to achieve wellbeing
. create a more flexible ‘worklife’ approach which allows for interruptions caused by infection and disease without adding to the stress it entails
